Byte Privacy Policy
Last updated 23 September 2026
Byte is a budgeting app made by All Bark (“we”, “us”). It reads your grocery receipts and, if you connect them, your bank transactions, so it can show you where your money goes and what things cost. This page explains exactly what we collect, who else touches it, and how to get rid of it.
What we collect
| Data | Why |
|---|---|
| Email address, and a display name if you set one | To create and sign you into your account. |
| Photos of receipts that you scan or upload | To read the line items, prices and totals off them. |
| The contents of those receipts — merchant, date, items, prices, totals | To build your spending history, budgets, shopping lists and price comparisons. |
| Bank and card transactions, balances and account names, if you connect an account | To show spending you haven’t scanned a receipt for, and to match receipts to card charges. |
| Subscription status and purchase history | To unlock the app for paying subscribers. |
| Crash reports and performance data | To find and fix bugs. |
We do not collect your location, contacts, health data or browsing history. We do not show ads, and we do not sell your data or share it with advertisers or data brokers.
How receipt scanning works
When you scan a receipt, the image is uploaded to our server and sent to Anthropic’s API, which reads the text and returns the structured line items. Anthropic processes the image on our behalf and does not use it to train their models. The image and the extracted data are then stored on our servers so the receipt stays in your history.
Community pricing — please read this part
This setting is on by default. When it is on, the prices you paid for grocery, household and personal-care items are pooled with other users’ prices so everyone can see the typical price of an item at a given store.
What is shared is the price of an item at a merchant — never your name, your email, your receipts, your bank data, or anything that identifies you. Other users only ever see a median price computed across many people, and one person’s data cannot be singled out of it. Dining and general shopping purchases are never included.
The setting is reciprocal: turning it off both stops your prices feeding other people’s results and stops you seeing theirs. You can turn it off at any time under Tag → Community Pricing.
Who else processes your data
We use a small number of services to run Byte. They act on our instructions and are not permitted to use your data for their own purposes.
| Service | What it handles |
|---|---|
| Supabase | Accounts, sign-in, and the database |
| Fly.io | Server hosting and file storage |
| Plaid | The connection to your bank, if you make one |
| Anthropic | Reading the text off receipt images |
| RevenueCat | Subscription status |
| Apple | Payment for the subscription — we never see your card |
| Sentry | Crash and error reports |
Byte never receives your bank username or password. That is entered inside Plaid’s own secure flow, and we only receive an access token plus the transactions it returns. We are also never sent your card details — Apple handles subscription payments entirely.
How long we keep things, and how to delete them
Your data stays until you remove it. You can delete an individual receipt at any time, and you can disconnect a bank under Tag → Connected Banks, which revokes our access token with Plaid immediately.
Deleting your account
Deleting your account from Tag removes your profile, your receipts and their line items, your transactions, your budgets and shopping lists, and your sign-in identity. We also revoke any bank connections with Plaid as part of the same operation.
Your receipt photos are deleted along with everything else, unless you have turned on “Improve receipt scanning” in Tag. That setting is off unless you switch it on, and it is the only thing that keeps your photos past deletion — see below.
One thing is retained either way, and we would rather say so plainly than bury it: de-identified parsing records. We keep a copy of the text our receipt reader extracted — merchant, date, items, prices — with your account identifier permanently removed, so we can measure how accurately it reads receipts. These records contain no card details, no name and no account reference, and are not connected to you.
Anonymous, aggregated community price data that has already been pooled cannot be traced back to an individual and is not removed.
“Improve receipt scanning” — optional, and off by default
In Tag there is a setting called Improve receipt scanning. It is off unless you turn it on, and every feature of Byte works identically whether it is on or off — we will never restrict the app based on this choice.
With it on, the photos of receipts you scan are kept so we can test and improve how accurately Byte reads them, including after you delete your account, at which point they are no longer linked to you or to any account. We record which version of this explanation you agreed to, and when.
Please be aware that a receipt can show things you may not want kept — the last four digits of your card, a store loyalty number, or pharmacy and medical purchases. If any of that concerns you, leave the setting off.
You can turn it off at any time, which stops us keeping any future scans. If you also want photos we already hold to be deleted, email privacy@allbark.dev and we will remove them — we keep enough of a reference to be able to honour that request.
These photos are never shown to other Byte users, never used for advertising, and never sold.
Your rights
You can ask us for a copy of your data, ask us to correct it, or ask us to delete it, by emailing the address below. Depending on where you live you may also have the right to object to or restrict certain processing, and to complain to your local data protection authority.
Children
Byte is not intended for children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect their data. If you believe a child has created an account, contact us and we will delete it.
Security
Traffic between the app and our servers is encrypted in transit, and access to your data requires your authenticated session. No system is perfectly secure, but we keep the number of services holding your data deliberately small.
Changes
If we change this policy we will update the date at the top of this page, and we will tell you in the app if the change is significant.
